CLEVELAND, Miss. - The suspect in two shooting deaths in Mississippi was returning from Arkansas when a license plate reader scanned his plates on a bridge over the Mississippi River. Police began tailed Shannon Lamb's car, but did not try to pull him over.

The suspect eventually pulled the car over and fled the vehicle.

Police were waiting for back-up when they heard a gunshot. When more officers arrived, they investigated the area and found Lamb had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

In Gautier, Mississippi, Amy Prentiss, 41, was found shot to death. About 300 miles north, at the college campus, history professor Ethan Schmidt was also shot. The campus was locked down much of Monday and classes have been canceled for Tuesday.

Prentiss' ex-husband said late Monday, their daughter is devastated by the murder of her mother.  Shawn O'Steen said their 19-year-old and Prentiss were "absolutely best friends," the Associated Press reported.  O'Steen said he and Prentiss divorced 15 years ago after being married for about seven years but they remained close friends.

Delta State is located in Cleveland, Miss. which is almost an hour north of Greenville near the Arkansas-Mississippi state line. Around 3,500 students enroll there each year.
