Acting VA secretary to visit Phoenix facility
PHOENIX - Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson says the agency will release nationwide data on patient wait times next week.
Gibson made the announcement Thursday during a visit to the Phoenix health care facility that was the initial focus of what has become a nationwide scandal over veterans and wait times.
Gibson spoke at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center. It has been alleged that numerous veterans died while waiting to get an appointment at the center.
Gibson said that the agency will make changes to improve care for veterans, including using more purchased care especially in rural areas.
A report by the VA's inspector general last week found 1,700 Phoenix area veterans were "at risk of being lost or forgotten" after being kept off the official waiting list.
