Accused pastry bandit a no show at council meeting
BAKER - Council member John Givens was absent from Tuesday's city council meeting where residents were hoping to share their frustration over his recent arrest with him.
Givens faces charges in a bizarre argument at a store, where he is accused of eating a pastry and not paying for it then threatening the store clerk who confronted him about the situation. Last week, Givens was arrested for theft of goods and abuse of office.
Nearly a week since the ordeal, resident's packed the meeting room for the council meeting. And, while Givens was a no who, residents did not hesitate to speak about the incident. Some asked that Givens be removed from office.
"This has been turned over to the proper authority," Councilman Pete Heine said. "We don't have the authority or the power to do anything."
