BATON ROUGE- News 2 was the only television station at Juvenile Court this morning as the 15-year-old accused shooter from Friday's murder in Glen Oaks was identified.
In court, prosecutors identified him as Branikin Jones. He was a 7th grader at Glen Oaks Middle School and just turned 15 in September.
According to investigators, Jones shot and killed 16-year old Daylon Wheeler after a fight. Detectives say he robbed Wheeler after the shooting Friday.
Due to the nature of the of the crime, it can be automatically transferred to the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's Office. If that happens, Jones will be tried as an adult and will be transferred to Parish Prison.
As both sides were leaving court, Jones' mother said Wheeler bullied her son. That led to a heated exchange in the hallway of the courtroom between her and Wheeler's mother, who called the accusation a lie.
"His character was not to be a bully," Wheeler's mother, Marval Johnson said. "They know his character is not be a bully to anyone."
Wheeler's mom called the events that unfolded Friday heart wrenching.
"It was senseless. It was something that didn't have to happen," Johnson said.
The detention hearing today was continued until January.
