BATON ROUGE - The accidental shooting that took one man's life and put another behind bars, has some community leaders talking.

The shooting happened Saturday afternoon in the 4900 block of Jefferson Avenue.

Demarcus Rheams, 20, and Jawan Billy, 19, were in the back of a house handling a gun when it went off. The bullet hit Rheams in the chest. He died at the scene.

One pastor in the community said it's going to take people standing together to end the violence.

"But we don't have to stay in these places. We don't have to stay in brokenness. We don't have to stay in cultures of violence. Together we can work to make a difference. That's the only way that a difference will be made," said Pastor Raymond A. Jetson, of Star Hill Church in Baton Rouge.

The pastor said people from Star Hill's congregation are committed to mentoring young boys and girls and conducting workshops for single moms.

Pastor Jetson said it's a part of the church's goal for 2015 to increase their impact on the community.

Billy is charged is with negligent homicide and illegal possession of a stolen firearm.
