BATON ROUGE - While transporting a patient to an area hospital, four Acadian paramedics were attacked when the patient turned violent.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around nine o'clock Tuesday night on Summa Boulevard. The unidentified victim became combative while in the ambulance as paramedics tried to treat them. The driver of the ambulance then pulled over to assist their partner. Another nearby Acadian unit saw the incident and stopped to help.

After fighting to restrain the patient, the four medics called Baton Rouge Police where an officer arrived on scene to assist. The patient was successfully detained and transported to the hospital.

Two of the paramedics had to be treated for various injuries including a broken finger from being bitten.

Acadian Ambulance operations manager Justin Cox said that the crew members were shaken up adding he's "very thankful" the medics are going to be okay.

Both the patient and medics were discharged from the hospital. Baton Rouge Police arrested the patient who now faces assault charges.
