NEW YORK- Scientists have described the fossil of a bird with a wingspan of about 21 feet and apparently snatched fish soaring over the ocean about 25 to 28-million years ago.
It was found in South Carolina and is taller than a giraffe.
It was found in 1983 near the Charleston airport but it was first described Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The man who wrote about it says the creature may have not landed on water and was probably clumsy on land.
It is named Pelagornis sandersi after the retired curator of the Charleston museum who recovered it.
