A flag of a different cloth
WASHINGTON- The U.S. Capitol will fly an American flag tomorrow made of industrial hemp. Representative Jared Polis of Colorado says he made the request and permission was granted after he has pushed for hemp to be legal for farmers to grow. Industrial hemp looks a lot like marijuana but does not have the psychoactive properties of pot. Federal law forbids growing hemp but not importing it. Historians contend the first American flags were made of hemp in the time of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Polis sponsored an amendment to the federal farm bill last month for farmers to grow hemp but the overall bill was defeated.
