BATON ROUGE- Late Monday, deputies released the name of the woman who was killed when her car drove into Ward's Creek near the Mall of Louisiana.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office identified the only person in the small SUV as Vivian Augustin. Augustin turned 89 the day she was killed.
Augustin was found inside her submerged car after a three hour search. It started when witnesses said the car disappeared under the creek's surface.
"[A witness] said that [the vehicle] left the road way and went underneath the bridge...and into the water," a department spokesperson said.
At least one person saw the vehicle's windows break. "The car probably filled up with water," the spokesperson said.
The St. George Fire Dept. also worked the crash.
The state will conduct an investigation to determine if more safety measures should be added along Frontage Road where the accident happened. There are some guardrails up, but leaders said those are for bridge protection.
