60,000 jobs needed in Louisiana through 2015

BATON ROUGE - More than 60,000 jobs are needed in Louisiana, by next year.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced the top industries for job growth in the state, construction and engineering are at the top of that list. Through 2015, those two industries alone are expected to grow by more than 30,000 positions. Louisiana employment will grow 1.7% through 2015 and 1.3% through 2022, that's higher than the national forecast, expected to grow 1.1% per year.

Hundreds of students at Baton Rouge Community College are working to fill that need, but employers say they don't have nearly enough skilled workers to fill them.

"Craftsmen are retiring at a rapid pace probably faster than ever before in the history of construction. The problem is, we are not getting the same quality of craftsmen, education and training wise, into the field right now so were losing them faster than we're getting them in," said Michael Doucet with Pala Group. "Right now we've got 72 open jobs, and we average anywhere from 400-500 a year, that we hire for, and we're probably going to double that probably next year."

The five industries expected to add the most jobs are:
Specialty trade contractors.
Heavy and civil-engineering construction.
Food and drink services.
Professional and technical services.
Ambulatory health-care services.

Skilled workers can start making $20-$30/hour after a two year program.
