6-year-old girl, mom killed after car flips into a canal
METAIRIE - A little girl and her mother were killed when the SUV they were in flipped into a canal in Metairie.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says the girl's mother was driving the vehicle. Thirty-two-year-old Elizabeth Braddock, of Kenner, was given CPR at the scene. It happened Tuesday around 1:30 p.m.
Braddock was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she later died. The little girl was not discovered until later. Her name has not been released.
A sheriff's spokesman says many witnesses, including an off-duty firefighter, stopped to help after the vehicle crashed into the canal. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call 911 to help investigators piece together what happened.
The metro area was pounded by heavy rain all day, but the sheriff's office couldn't confirm if the accident was due to slick roads.
