LaPLACE – Deputies in St. John the Baptist Parish say a 5-year-old girl is dead after she shot herself with a handgun Saturday morning.

Around 9:44 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a home on Country Club Drive in LaPlace for a medical emergency. The girl’s father told investigators that 5-year-old Haley Moore shot herself while playing with the handgun.

EMS transported the girl to a local hospital where she later died. Deputies say the incident is still under investigation.
