5-week-old baby left in car
SLIDELL - The mother of a 5-week-old infant is in custody after she left the child locked inside a car for more than 30 minutes parked at a Slidell strip mall.
Police booked 44-year-old Gloria Elzy, of Slidell, with second-degree cruelty to juveniles and a warrant for failure to appear. She says she forgot the child was in the car.
Police say someone reported seeing an unresponsive child in a car Tuesday and called 911.
When Officer Joshua Funck arrived, he used a device to unlock the car and removed the infant, who was sweating profusely. The child was then rushed to an area hospital, revived and has since made a full recovery.
Police Chief Randy Smith said Wednesday that had the citizen not called 911, the baby would have died.
