3 arrested, 1 sought for mailed pot
GONZALES - Sheriff's deputies arrested three people and said they're searching for a fourth connected to a scheme to mail marijuana to Ascension Parish.
Major Kevin Hanna with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies arrested Miriam Lazo Garcia, 43, of Gonzales, as well as two other people in the country illegally: 33-year-old Enrique Romo Bustos and 28-year-old Claudio Alejo Eguia. Hanna said deputies are still searching for a fourth person, 31-year-old Renee Martinez, who they said was Garcia's boyfriend.
On Oct. 22, Detectives and U. S. Postal Inspectors intercepted 20 pounds of marijuana they said was being mailed to Garcia. Deputies arrested her when she picked up the package two days later, and said they found out she was being paid $500 to deliver the package to Bustos and Eguia in Prairieville.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Bustos and Eguia at their residence. They also said a search of Garcia's residence found more drugs as well as two weapons, which led detectives to get an arrest warrant for her boyfriend, Martinez.
Deputies said immigration officials put a hold on Bustos and Eguia, and Garcia was booked on drug and weapons charges.
Anyone with information about Martinez's whereabouts should call the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division at (225) 621-8350 or by texting 847411 to their anonymous tip line.
