ZACHARY, La. - A 24-year-old man was struck and killed by a pickup truck on Hwy 67, according to Louisiana State Police Tpr. Jared Sandifer.

It happened shortly after midnight Sunday on Hwy 67 north of Port Hudson-Pride Road. Britt Efferson of Central was walking along Hwy 67 when he stepped into the northbound lane in an attempt to flag down a vehicle.

The driver of a GMC pickup truck was unable to avoid hitting Efferson as he stepped into the roadway, according to Sandifer. Efferson died as a result of the crash. Impairment on the part of Efferson is suspected, and a toxicology sample from him was submitted to the State Police Crime Lab.

The driver of the pickup was not cited in the crash.
