Police chief's son questioned in deadly shooting
ST. GABRIEL - Officials said a police chief's son in Iberville Parish shot and killed two people after a fight overnight in St. Gabriel, according to Sheriff Brett Stassi.
The sheriff said Kevin Ambeau Jr., the son of St. Gabriel's police chief, shot and killed 30-year-old Rove Lodge and 26-year-old Dominique Dunbar at a trailer on MLK Parkway.
Stassi told News 2 the shooting stemmed from a fight at a nearby gas station earlier in the day on Sunday, and that Ambeau may have shot the pair in self-defense. Deputies recovered two different sets of shell casings from the scene, and the sheriff described the scene as a shootout between the two parties.
"I want the community to know we have enough blood shed," Stassi said. "Two brothers already dead, we need to make sure we stay calm and allow law enforcement and prosecutors to take care of what needs to be done."
The sheriff said deputies were questioning Ambeau at this time but he did not know if charges would be forthcoming.
The mother of the two men who were killed said she just saw her two sons for Mother's Day. The tragedy and fact that she'll never see her two sons again isn't easy to digest.
"It's unspeakable," Angela Stewart said.
Stewart said she first learned about the impending trouble on Twitter.
"He done put on Twitter, I'm ready to spray this mother ******* town," Stewart said. "He was also tweeting while they were putting my children in an ambulance, I'm glad my momma don't got to bury me."
Stewart is concerned that her family won't get a fair shake with a relative of a high ranking member of law enforcement implicated in Monday's shooting. However, Sheriff Brett Stassi pledged to make sure the investigation was thorough, fair and complete.
"I'm always afraid of retaliation," Stassi said. "This started with two fights, and we end up with two dead. I'm hoping any retaliation that the families come forward and we stop it with what we've lost already."
