2 injured in double shooting near Canal Street
NEW ORLEANS - An early afternoon shooting involving an AK-47 assault rifle injured two men near Canal Street in New Orleans Monday.
A Tulane doctor who was driving the area was also injured when his car was slammed into by a vehicle driven by one of the fleeing suspects.
The shooting happened around noon near North Prieur and Conti Streets, according to WWL-TV. There were reports of a man running from the scene, carrying an AK-47 assault rifle.
The man with the AK-47 was taken into custody near the original scene while two other men attempted to flee in another vehicle. That car rear-ended a the doctor's vehicle near Canal and North Claiborne Avenues, and both suspects were taken into custody.
WWL-TV reported the doctor was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of back injuries sustained during the crash.
A witness said she heard around 20 shots fired during the shootout. NOPD reported the recovery of the assault rifle believed to have been used in the shootout.
