PLAQUEMINE - The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office and Plaquemine Police Department completed a roundup of dozens of suspected drug dealers Wednesday following an intensive undercover operation through their L.E.A.D. (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) Task Force.

The intensive investigation that culminated earlier Wednesday had been ongoing since its first roundup in 2013 with a special focus on bringing down prescription drug pushers. Sheriff Brett Stassi of IPSO said prescription drug dealers have presented a unique challenge in the past because many of them have legal prescriptions which they use to obtain the drugs before selling their medication to drug abusers and addicts.

Sheriff Stassi of said some 30 deputies and officers participated in the roundup with undercover agents making dozens of purchases of a variety of prescription drugs in addition to heroin, crack cocaine, synthetic marijuana and more from unsuspecting dealers.

“These arrests are from White Castle to Maringouin and Plaquemine to St. Gabriel,” Sheriff Stassi said. “No area of the parish was ignored. We will continue to go after drug dealers here, using a variety of investigative tools. This is an on-going area of emphasis to get the drugs out of Iberville.”

Sheriff Stassi was present on Monday when agents and other law enforcement agencies convened a secret session of the Iberville Parish Grandy Jury to obtain authorization for the roundup.
