18-year-old found shot in BR home
BATON ROUGE - A murderer in Baton Rouge is on the loose after a family was found shot in broad daylight.
Police said 18-year-old Idalis Smith was found dead inside her home on North 30th Street around 1 p.m. Cpl. L'Jean McKneelyMcKneely said her stepfather was also suffering from gunshot wounds at the home, and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Several people gathered at the scene, outraged someone would shoot a teenage girl.
"It makes no sense," said Keon Preston, Stop the Violence. "It's heartbreaking, it's sad, heartbreaking that it happened to a young lady.
Preston said the area is no stranger to crime and called upon local pastors to help curb violence within the community.
"We have way too many churches in the area for this to be happening," Preston said. "Our pastors are lazy, they need to do more."
Investigators said they believe someone shot both victims and fled before police could arrive.
McKneely said many details about the shooting are still unclear, and anyone with information should call the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-3948.
