18 plead not guilty in Orleans gang case
NEW ORLEANS - Eighteen alleged members of a New Orleans gang have pleaded not guilty in a racketeering case that prosecutors say involved drugs, threats and killings - including the death of a toddler.
It took state Judge Camille Buras more than 30 minutes to read the indictment Friday against the alleged members of the "3NG" gang. The indictments were handed up in June.
Six defendants indicated they had lawyers. One problem: the public defenders' office said it would not be able to represent all of the defendants who had not retained counsel. Buras said the court would seek private attorneys to assist in representing the others.
Alleged victims of the violence related to the gang included 2-year-old Keira Holmes, who was hit when gunfire erupted at a housing development in December 2011.
