BATON ROUGE - Military dignitaries commissioned more than a dozen cadets and midshipmen from LSU's ROTC programs Thursday at the campus.

The 17 cadets were commissioned as second lieutenants in the respective branches. They included nine cadets from the LSU Air Force ROTC program, five from the LSU Army ROTC program, and three LSU students commissioned as second lieutenants or ensigns from Southern University's Navy ROTC program.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, LSU's commencement speaker, gave the commissioning oath of office while Maj. Gen. Stephen Fogarty, the commanding general for the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, was the guest speaker.

The newly commissioned officers were also scheduled to be acknowledged at LSU's spring commencement ceremony Thursday evening.
