The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says that 17 people have admitted catching large amounts of shrimp in the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge and selling them commercially.

It says that state wildlife agents staked out the refuge after getting numerous complaints. They watched the people catch more than the 5-gallon limit, then bought more than 550 pounds of shrimp from them in an undercover investigation. It's illegal to sell shrimp caught in the refuge.

A news release says all pleaded guilty in Lake Charles to federal shrimp violations. One is to be sentenced Oct. 21.

The rest got sentences such as fines, a 10-day jail term. Eight were fined and barred from going into any national wildlife refuge while on probation, and four of those lost their hunting and fishing licenses.
