DUTCHTOWN- Coaches are still trying to come to grips with the loss of a freshman football player at the town's high school.
James Cobb collapsed in the school gym, playing basketball after football practice Thursday. He died at an area hospital. He was 14-years-old.
"We lost one of our family members," said Coach Benny Saia.
"He went through our workout and was in the gym basically waiting for his mom to come pick him up ...and collapsed."
Saia says Thursdays practice was routine, and players got plenty of water.
"We just try to hydrate them," Saia said.
"There were no signs that he was struggling or anything like that. He just fell out."
Every high school, middle school, and elementary school in Ascension Parish have defibrillators. Staff members are required to know how to use them. But, those couldn't help Thursday.
"'It's a tragedy and I don't know what else you can say other than you trust in God to pull us through it."
