BATON ROUGE - Animal control officials said more than a dozen dogs had to be put down overnight after Baton Rouge Police discovered a dogfighting operation while investigating drug activity.

Police arrested six people in all at 3819 Uncas Street, where detectives said a "high level" of narcotic trafficking had been taking place.

Officers said two of the people tried to run to a nearby house and flush marijuana down a toilet when police arrived. Police said they also found crack cocaine and more marijuana inside the Uncas Street residence.

Hilton Cole with East Baton Rouge Animal Control said when police searched the home they discovered 14 pit bulls, IV bags, drugs for canines and other material clearly used to breed and train the dogs for fighting. Cole said all the dogs had scars from fighting or training to fight, and had to be put down for being overly aggressive.

Police arrested Elton Kelly and Tyrone Dyer on suspicion of dogfighting and drug possession. Kelly was also charged with resisting arrest. They also arrested Paulette Alford, Kendrick Carter, Michael Carter, and Malcolm Floyd for drug possession.
