10-year-old caught with gun says it was for protection
BATON ROUGE - A 10-year-old boy is in juvenile detention after sheriff's deputies say he was caught with a gun on a school bus.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's office says other students saw the gun and reported it to authorities at the bus transfer point on North Sherwood Forest.
Deputies found the loaded .25 caliber pistol in the boy's backpack.
The boy, a 5th grader at Wildwood Elementary School, told deputies he had the gun to protect himself after he was threatened by a 4th and 5th grader during the ride home Thursday.
He says he took the gun from his grandfathers' home.
He's charged with carrying a firearm by a student on school property and illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
