1 killed, others injured after a man drove into a sugarcane field

ST. MARY PARISH - Deputies are investigating a deadly crash that took the life of a 55-year-old Patterson man and injured three others Friday night.

 The vehicle crash happened on Victoria Riverside Road near Little Hope Lane. Investigators said 26-year-old Cabot Pugh was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra west, and for somereason he drove off the roadway and struck several subjects in a sugarcane field. Investigators said the group of people had stopped on the headland while out riding ATV's in the area. Kelly Dupre Sr., 55, was pronounced dead on the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner.

Two others were seriously injured in the crash and transported to hospitals in Lafayette and Baton Rouge by Acadian Air Med Services. Another woman was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance with minor injuries and was later released. Investigators said Pugh was cited for careless operation of a vehicle. They said he registered a 0.00g% blood alcohol concentration on a breath test.

A toxicology sample was obtained and has been submitted for analysis. The crash still remains under investigation.
