1 dead, 1 rescued at construction site trench collapse
COVINGTON - One person was killed when a trench collapsed at a construction site in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, north of New Orleans. Another victim was rescued after being trapped in dirt up to his shoulders.
The accident happened early Thursday afternoon in the Covington area.
Crews from area fire departments were involved in freeing the trapped worker.
Jason Kaufmann, a spokesman for a St. Tammany fire district, said the men were working in a trench about 15-feet deep when the collapse occurred.
The St. Tammany Sheriff's Office said the freed worker was alert and talking to rescuers.
