Literacy Matters

This fall, WBRZ teamed up with the Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition because literacy matters. We asked students in the capital area to come up with ideas to raise awareness about the struggle that has become the “reality of literacy” – the theme of Literacy Week 2009.

The students with the most compelling ideas were selected to write a public service announcement for the Coalition. Students across the parish participated in the contest. Representatives from the Coalition and WBRZ reviewed each entry. Zachary High School students Claire Davis and Morgan Albert won the competition and went to work with WBRZ Director of Production, Ed Ball, to turn their ideas into two 30-second public service announcements for broadcast on WBRZ.

The students selected actors to appear in the spots, determined shooting locations and participated in directing and editing the final product. WBRZ donated its production services, staff and equipment to the cause.

The winning public service announcement first aired live on WBRZ’s morning newscast, 2une In, on December 4th. Following 2une In, the Coalition held a breakfast at Boudreaux’s in Baton Rouge, hosted by WBRZ News 2 anchor John Pastorek, to celebrate.

Claire Davis and Morgan Albert’s winning public service announcements are currently being aired on WBRZ, our sister station WBTR and Cable Channel 18. Watch the winning public service announcements below.
