BATON ROUGE - Southern men's basketball coach Roman Banks said he still believes in his team and his administration, which are the main reasons he decided to agree to a contract extention.

After the University failed to provide adequate academic information to the NCAA, the Jaguars probation status with the NCAA is still uncertain, but Banks is certain that the school shares his vision for the future of the program.

"My thought process is that hopefully one day we'll be able to go to the NCAA tournament and beat somebody," Banks said on Tuesday.

The administration expects to hear a ruling on their probation sometime later this week.

BATON ROUGE - Following a successful season and a tumultuous offseason, Southern University announced an agreement in principle to retain Roman Banks as the men's basketball head coach.

Banks, the 2013 SWAC coach of the year, spoke with Texas A&M about an assistant coaching job with the Aggies but ultimately returned to the Jaguars, who are still under NCAA probation for academic infractions.

"Today, Southern University has expressed its commitment to the future of the men's basketball program by investing in me to remain as head coach," Banks said. "With a new agreement in place, I am eager to move the men's basketball program forward while elevating the standard of excellence that we set as a coaching staff when I first arrived in 2011."

Banks is 59-37 as Southern's head coach: he led the team to the 2013 SWAC tournament championship, and the 2014 team to the regular season title.

BATON ROUGE - While veteran players like Lee Doss and Dray Joseph still have a good chance to be picked up by an NFL team this May, Southern's Pro Day found a name not regularly featured on a fall Saturday on The Bluff.

Rashaun Allen only registered nine receptions this season for the Jags, but "Big Tight" as he's known by teammates and coaches came through with some amazing numbers Wednesday to grab the attention of NFL scouts.

The Cleveland, Ohio native benched 225 pounds 24 times, posted a 39-inch vertical leap, and ran a 4.6-40 yard dash at 250 pounds to impress scouts, coaches and teammates.

"I feel like there is no ceiling for me," said Allen. "I think a lot of teams saw the best in me today."

Former Jaguar quarterback and leader Dray Joseph also had a good day throwing the ball, according to several scouts.

His accuracy stood out, and there to catch almost every pass was fellow graduating senior Lee Doss.

Both athletes could be picked up in the late rounds of this May's NFL Draft.

BATON ROUGE - The Southern Jaguars football team is learning their defense just like any new subject in school.

It may be a traditional way to teach and learn something, but this type of studying isn't common in football film rooms.

The idea stemmed from defensive secondary coach Marty Biagi challenging his defensive players to know their assignments well enough to teach it to their incoming teammates.

"If you say it, hear it, draw it, present it, teach it, those kind of examples," said Biagi. "Then I should be able to on film see it go from the classroom to the play on the field."

Head coach Dawson Odums likes the results he's seen from his players.

"If you take teaching in a format to where your students can give it back then they arent learning," said the second-year head coach. "The number one muscle that we have to use to create some consistency is our mind."

BATON ROUGE - A ruling from the Southwestern Athletic Conference will allow the Southern University men's and women's basketball will be allowed to play in the SWAC tournament.

This comes after the decision earlier this week from the NCAA to ban the Jaguars from postseason play.

The SWAC conference says the NCAA allowed them to change their bylaws for the 2014 tournament regarding the automatic bid to the NCAA championship tournament.

The new rule is the team that advances the farthest in the SWAC tournament and is allowed to play in the NCAA tournament will receive the auto-bid. If all remaining eligible teams are eliminated in the same round, the bid will go to the highest seed that made it the furthest.

Other institutions that will now be allowed to participate in the SWAC tournament are Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

This year's SWAC men's and women's basketball championships will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas from March 11-15.

BATON ROUGE - The NCAA could ban all Southern University teams from post season play over a paperwork problem.

Individual sports teams like football and basketball have received post season bans in the past, but this time, all athletic teams are at risk.

"It's devastating to the school, the faculty, and definitely the student body," said Southern junior Laron Addison.

Southern has been in hot water with the NCAA since 2011, when the Student First Initiative was formed, after receiving initial poor academic progress rates.

"It's not fair for the new students coming out, trying to play ball and get to the championship and they can't because of the old teams," said student Devin Buckles.

Southern athletics officials said they were first notified about the issues in December and have been working with the NCAA to get the correct paperwork in order. If unresolved, the greatest impact would be to winter sports including indoor track, bowling and basketball.

Both men's and women's basketball team are ranked 10-1 and favored to win the SWAC championship title.

The NCAA said if Southern met deadlines for submitting the paperwork, the ban would be lifted in time for them to compete in upcoming tournaments.

"Yes, it's a temporary setback, and yes there's some shock and some disappointment up front," said Southern Athletic Director William Broussard. "Again, it's incumbent on us to continue, to encourage our student athletes and for me, and the athletic department staff to continue to encourage our coaches."

The Southwestern Athletic Conference tournaments begin March 11. The university has until next Friday to meet the NCAA deadline, or there won't be any post season basketball games.
