Southern and Prairie View, picked in the preseason to finish first and second in the SWAC West, have struggled some to start the season. The two teams combining for a 1-4 record, and still looking to establish an identity.

Southern pulled out a 62-59 double overtime thriller against Prairie View in their 2013 matchup, after trailing 35-13 in the 3rd quarter. The 2013 matchup was viewed as a turning point to the Jaguars season, as they eventually won the SWAC title. Southern hoping that a win this weekend could serve the same purpose.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Blackshears Stadium.

Update Southern says Redding was eligible to play vs NSU http://www.wbrz.com/news/update-southern-says-redding-was-eligible-to-play-vs-nsu/ http://www.wbrz.com/news/update-southern-says-redding-was-eligible-to-play-vs-nsu/ Southern Sports Tue, 16 Sep 2014 5:21:39 PM Seth Lewis Update Southern says Redding was eligible to play vs NSU

UPDATE 9/17:

Southern University released a statement on Wednesday stating that OL Reginald Redding was eligible to play in the Jaguars' game against Northwestern State on Saturday night.

The school said in the release that "a misinterpretation of a conversation involving the student-athlete and the SU compliance officer Monday resulted in the student-athlete's comments to a reporter that he believed he was not eligible to play. Redding was cleared to play in the game against Northwestern State.

Redding's status as a certified eligible student-athlete remains unchanged and he is eligible to play for the rest of the season."

BATON ROUGE - Southern starting Left Tackle Reginald Redding took the field against Northwestern State Saturday, but he wasn't suppose to.

The junior was on a list of ineligible players but his name was overread, according to Redding. The list included the three starting defensive backs that were held out of the game, Dionte McDuffy, Kevin King and De'Andre Woodland.

It's the third time Redding has been ruled ineligible this year. Redding hopes to be cleared for this week's SWAC opener versus Prairie View.

BATON ROUGE - Southern got a double dose of heartache on Saturday as Jaguars lost to Northwestern State 51-27, while off the field the Jags lost three more players to compliance issues.

"I don't know any of my friends in the coaching profession going through it so they can't give me advice," said Odums after the game.

The Jags lost three defensive backs just minutes before the game: Safety Dionte McDuffy, defensive back De'Andre Woodland and defensive back Kevin King all failed to meet compliance regulations, adding to the seven players already finished for the season.

"It is what it is and I don't know what it is," Odums said.

The Jags had no answer for Zach Adkins either.

Adkins accounted for 5 touchdowns on the day, which tied Bobby Hebert for most in Deamons history.

The Deamons jumped out to a 17-nothing lead after a Northwestern State fumble return for a touchdown.

The Jaguars responded with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Austin Howard to Willie Quinn, but that's as close as it got.

The Deamons answered right back with a touchdown of their own to make the score 24-7 and the rout was on.

JJ Walker makes his Southern debut http://www.wbrz.com/news/jj-walker-makes-his-southern-debut/ http://www.wbrz.com/news/jj-walker-makes-his-southern-debut/ Southern Sports Tue, 9 Sep 2014 9:19:32 PM Seth Lewis JJ Walker makes his Southern debut

In case you missed it, Saturday marked the debut of a guy everyone in the Jaguars locker room regards as a natural born superstar. The 5 star prospect out of West Feliciana, JJ Walker

JJ hitting the field with his Jag teammates for the first time since signing with the team in March. But that wasn't the first time we were introduced to JJ here at WBRZ. We first met him in 2012, when he wanted to tackle bad guys at the same time he was beginning his battle with DIPG, a rare brain tumor that has a 6 to 12 month life expectancy. Over two years later, JJ, leading Southern out of the tunnel a special moment not just for he and his family.

"It was an inspiration to other kids." JJ Walker said. "It was pretty good, yeah. I loved it. And I liked when we rocked back and forth"

JJ's favorite reason for the joining the team is simple

"For me I have brothers now"

Brothers like Brian McCain, the Jags starting fullback and JJ's best friend on the team."We were able to spend time together this summer." Brian McCain said. "We went to see transformers. We had a great time. We ate a lot of popcorn, skittles and everything."

For McCain, he picks up a friendship that will last well beyond his playing days.

"i'm looking forward to keeping in touch with him and hanging out with him for the entirety of life"

And for JJ, he can up what McCain means to him in three poetic words.

"Happiness, courage and love."

JJ says he plans to attend every Southern home game that he can. As the Jags are undefeated this year when he's in attendance. Reporting on Southern, I'm Seth Lewis, WBRZ Sports 2.

Southern Respecting Northwestern State http://www.wbrz.com/news/southern-respecting-northwestern-state/ http://www.wbrz.com/news/southern-respecting-northwestern-state/ Southern Sports Tue, 9 Sep 2014 8:35:05 PM Seth Lewis Southern Respecting Northwestern State

Week 3 for Southern brings into Baton Rouge their most evenly matched opponent in Northwestern State, another FCS school from in-state. Now you may remember, the two teams met last year, with the demons getting the edge 55-14. Some even saying Southern underestimated Northwestern State, but head coach Dawson Odums promises none of that will be happening this year.

"Our guys understand man we have to respect our opponents." Southern Head Coach Dawson Odums said. "We're going to play against a good football team. A very good football team. Even though they're oh and two, they're capable of putting up big numbers. Especially from the offensive side of the ball. And they're capable of playing dominating defense."

There's also the excitement of playing the in-state foe, located only 3 hours apart, against familiar faces lining up across from you.

"A lot of the players know guys on the team. A lot of family and friends are probably trying to come and watch. It creates a natural rivalry because of the proximity of the schools. It gives a chance to have a really college atmosphere and I think that's why college football is so exciting and interesting to watch."

Outside of redemption, and maybe some in-state bragging rights, this game should also serve as a great tune-up for Southern before they head into SWAC play come next week. Reporting on the Jags, I'm Seth Lewis, WBRZ Sports 2.

The Jaguars started the scoring with a 3 yard touchdown run by Malcolm Crockett.

LAFAYETTE - The Southern Jags are looking for a repeat performance of their SWAC championship starting tonight at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Ragin Cajuns won a share of the Sun Belt Conference title last year and their 3rd straight R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. They will be looking for their first conference title since 1970 when they were the Gulf States conference.

Although the Jags are picked to repeat as champions, they will have to do with with a new starting quarterback. Deonte Shorts is a former Southern Lab standout and will get his chance on the gridiron tonight. He will be helped out by a veteran team and highly rated transfers around him.

For the Cajuns, Terrance Broadway is the preseason Sun Belt offensive player of the year. The former Capitol high standout is now a senior: he threw for 2419 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

So whether you're watching the game from Cajun Field or on the Bluff, the Jaguars start their quest for an encore championship performance tonight.

BATON ROUGE - The Southern Jaguars and UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns are set to square off Saturday at Cajun Field.

Both teams won their conference last year, but ULL returns their three-year starting quarterback while SU will break in redshirt freshman Deonte Shorts with his first collegiate start.

"I think when he first runs out there he'll be like 'this is why I chose Southern,' said Southern head coach Dawson Odums. "At the end of the day, I think he will settle down after he comes off the field from warmups, get himself to go mentally and I think he'll do well."

Meanwhile in Lafayette, Cajuns head coach Mark Hudspeth says he is worried about the rust of a first game after taking it easy on his veteran team with less live tackling in fall practices.

"You just want to be sure we can tackle and run to the ball," said Hudspeth. "I know we can because we have good team speed, but that would be one of the biggest concerns adjusting to the speed of the game."
