BATON ROUGE - Even with the bad news that redshirt freshman quarterback Deonte Shorts will be out for a few practices leading up to the final scrimmage this fall, the Southern Jaguars believe they have one of their pivotal pieces back at practice.

Wide receiver Willie Quinn got back on the practice field this week after suffering a jaw injury in the summer.

Also back at practice was Zach Brown on the offensive line and Randall Mendard at wideout.

The Southern men's basketball team is dealing with the loss of a couple of key pieces, losses that could be hard to overcome in the years ahead.

Dealing with NCAA restrictions, the Jaguars lost two returning players who opted to transfer due to the team's inability to lay in the NCAA postseason.

Calvin Godfrey and Damien Goodwin both chose to utilize the hardship transfer option and leave Southern with just six scholarship players on their 2014 roster.

Head coach Roman Banks said his coaching staff is working hard to recruit new players to campus and hopes to have a full roster of 13 to 15 players on the team in time for the season to start.

BATON ROUGE - The Southern Jaguars battled the daunting heat in their first scrimmage of the fall.

While the Jags haven't named their starting quarterback, there were some new wrinkles in the offense.

Returning running back Lenard Tillery(two touchdowns) did a good job fending off RB transfers from Pittsburgh, Southern Mississippi, and Louisiana Tech.

The defense set the tone for most of practice, taking advantage of ball handling issues on the offensive side of the ball.

BATON ROUGE - Southern football didn't use it's practice field today and Jaguars head coach Dawson Odums says the team will continue to instead practice on Mumford Stadium because the practice field is unfit for use.

Odums said staffers picked up two buckets full of rocks that had littered the practice field and said he wouldn't subject his team to those playing conditions.

"I want them to have the best practice and playing experience possible," Odums said before practice on Saturday.

The team practiced at Mumford Stadium without lines on the field (which Odums said was a first for him in his coaching career) and said the Jaguars will continue to practice at Mumford Stadium, even if it tears up the field before the home opener against Central Methodist on September 6th.

Odums put out a call for help to build a new practice facility.

"We need help from the community," Odums said.

"We're trying to build a program here, but we need help."

Because of the slick conditions on the field, head coach Dawson Odums brought practice inside to prevent injury.

So what do the Jags miss by practicing indoors?

"Getting a good sweat going," said Odums. But everything else like execution, we can get everything else going...we'll scale it back, but we'll be alright, we'll make up for it down the road."

Southern coaches and players expect to be back outside for Saturday's practice.

BATON ROUGE - Southern fans have endured a roller coaster year with their sports teams.

While the Jaguars won five SWAC titles, they also had the NCAA hammer brought on them by banning them from postseason play.

"We've been working on this now for 15 months, so optimism isn't necessarily what drives you," said Athletics Director Dr. William Broussard. "I don't mean to say we're not optimistic, but it's about whether you have the tools or not to get the work done."

Southern believes they now have the tools: 1) being able to track data, 2) putting new policies in place, & 3) hiring a Director of Institutional Complaince.

"Getting the unusable data ban lifted so we have postseason eligibility restored at large is the first hurdle," Broussard told Sports 2. "Then, going team by team and ensuring every team has postseason eligibility will require some follow up."

"Having a Director of Institutional Compliance to report directly to a campus executive and be able to say 'here's what I need or here's what I'm not getting from this area,' is a lot more successful organizational approach than having the stand-alone associate compliance officer that works in the athletics department."

"I think we have a football team that is more hungry than they were last year," said Odums. "I think they understand the work that it takes, and I think they understand what they have to get better at...so we're excited to see how the new puzzle pieces fit with the old."

Coach Odums also said he has his eye on the real players reporting later this week.

"Vacation is over, the preparation it takes to get a football team ready," said the head coach. "We're excited about the opportunity that lies in front of us."

BIRMINGHAM - Texas Southern University President Dr. John Rudley says smaller schools "are severely handicapped" by limited resources and need help from the NCAA.

Six Southwestern Athletic Conference schools could face postseason bans from the latest Academic Progress Rates, released on Wednesday. That includes half of the league's football programs and all of Southern's teams because of questions about the school's APR data.

Rudley, the chairman of the SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors, says historically black colleges and universities have graduation rates of 36 percent for all students.

He says the standard of a 50 percent graduation rate for athletes "is set so high that most HBCU's and other limited resource institutions cannot meet that standard."

Last year, 15 programs among seven schools were penalized.
