NEW ORLEANS - Federal fisheries officials have cut this year's recreational red snapper season in the Gulf of Mexico from 11 days to nine days, starting June 1.

NOAA Fisheries spokeswoman Kim Amendola says the change was needed because Louisiana opened state waters year-round after the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council cut the snapper quota in April.

The management council acted after a U.S. District Court judge in Washington, D.C., ruled that federal regulators had been mismanaging the recreational catch for years.

The change won't affect commercial catches. Commercial boats have stayed within their quota, while recreational anglers have gone over quota for years.

Charter captains and Louisiana regulators say the council and NOAA Fisheries use bad data.

The agency is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says recreational fishing for gray triggerfish will close in Louisiana waters at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and will remain closed until Jan. 1. The state is matching a closure in federal waters.

NOAA Fisheries biologists said Wednesday the annual recreational catch target of 217,000 pounds will soon be met, and the closure is needed to stay within that limit.

NOAA Fisheries said Monday that it will reduce the recreational bag limit for red grouper in federal waters from four to three fish, starting Monday. It will close the 2014 red grouper recreational harvest at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 16.

The agency says the changes are to compensate for last year's catch, which went 492,000 pounds over the annual limit of 1.9 million pounds.

BATON ROUGE - The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has set the 2014 commercial king mackerel season that starts July 1.

Officials said Thursday that once the season opens, it will remain open until the quota of approximately 1.18 million pounds is met or projected to be met.

King mackerel is a significant commercial fishery in Louisiana. From 2000 through 2012 Louisiana has landed, on average, an amount equal to about 75 percent of the allotted western Gulf of Mexico quota. In 2012 approximately 969,017 pounds were landed in Louisiana.

A significant amount of the king mackerel landed in Louisiana is shipped to markets in the northeastern U.S.

Currently, the 2013-2014 commercial king mackerel season is closed as the established quota has been harvested.
