The cold weather is here, but how long will it last?

Created: November 18, 2009 5:59 AM

Short Term:  It is a very cold start to this Wednesday morning!  We have clear skies, calm winds and temperatures in the upper 30s.  Some areas in southern Mississippi, the Felicianas, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, Pointe Coupee and Livingston Parishes have temperatures in the lower to mid 30s.  In those areas patchy frost will be possible.  If you have any frost, email me some pictures at dnussbaum@wbrz.com , or you can upload them on www.wbrz.com .  Be sure to dress warmly as you head out the door!

It will be another cool, but pleasant afternoon.  An area of high pressure will remain over us, and that will bring in the sunny skies along with the cool temperatures.  Highs will break into the lower 60s.

Look for more very cold temperatures tonight with clear skies.  Some patchy frost will be possible again over the areas that received some this morning.  Lows will fall into the upper 30s.  Be sure to cover any plants, and bring in any pets tonight.  You do not want your plants to get burned by the frost, and Fido being too cold!

Rest of the Week:  The area of high pressure will remain over us on Thursday, and this will lead to another sunny day.  However, it will be warmer as more easterly winds return to the area.  This will allow the temperatures to climb to around 70.  It will remain chilly, but not as cold at night with clear skies and lows in the mid 40s.

The area of high pressure will move to the East Coast on Friday, and this will bring back southerly winds over Louisiana.  That is going to allow for some moisture to return as well, and this will make the skies partly cloudy.  At the same time, an area of low pressure is forecast to develop along the South Texas Coast, and it will move to the northeast.  This will aid in the development of some rain across much of South Texas and Southwest Louisiana.  It will be a mild day with highs in the upper 60s.  It will not be as cold on Friday night with lows near 50.

The rain will become more widespread on Saturday as the area of low pressure moves toward the Southeast Louisiana coast.  Some of the rain could become heavy at times.  It will be cooler due to the rain with highs only in the lower 60s.  The rains will be more scattered on Saturday night, and lows will be near 50.

The area of low pressure will be off to the east of Louisiana on Sunday, and we will start to dry out.  The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with highs back into the upper 60s.

Tropical Update:  All areas of the tropics are quiet, and tropical cyclone formation is not expected through Thursday.
