Happy Groundhog Day!
Groundhog Forecast: Punxsutawney Phil made his prediction this morning as he always does on February 2nd. The weather was cloudy and very cold in Punxsutawney, PA. Phil saw his shadow, so that means 6 more weeks of Winter!!! BOOO! For more information, click here.
Short Term: It is a cloudy and chilly Groundhog Day across the Baton Rouge area too. There are also some areas of fog, so watch out for low visibilities. Temperatures are in the mid 40s, and they will hold steady through 9 AM.
An area of high pressure will move by just to the north of Louisiana this afternoon, but since it is north of us, verses over us, it will not totally clear out the clouds. Therefore, we will have a mix of sun and clouds. It will be a little warmer with high temperatures around 60.
The sky will be partly cloudy tonight, and it will still be chilly with low temperatures in the upper 30s.
Week Ahead: The area of high pressure will move to the east tomorrow, and we will have some partly cloudy skies here to start to day. By the afternoon the clouds will start to increase from the west as our next weather-maker moves closer to us. It will be a cool day with highs in the upper 50s. More clouds will build in on Wednesday night, and a few showers will be possible. Lows will be in the mid 40s.
An area of low pressure will form off the Texas Coast, and it will track toward Louisiana just like they have in the past. This low will tap into the Gulf Moisture, and that will lead to widespread
rain moving into Baton Rouge. It will be an all day rain event, and we could have a few thunderstorms too.
The rain is expected to become heavy at times. Rainfall totals are expected to be pretty high as we could get as much as 2 to 4 inches! Some minor flooding will be possible, but since January was pretty dry the ground will be able to take in a lot of water. The temperatures will be cool as they climb into the mid 50s.
Periods of rain will continue on Thursday night, and it will still be heavy at times. Lows will be in the lower 50s.
The area of low pressure will slowly move to the east on Friday, and that will gradually put an end to the rain. We will start the day with rain, but it will come to an end during the afternoon. We will not clear the skies out, so plenty of clouds will still greet us. High temperatures will be in the mid 50s. It will be mostly cloudy on Friday night with lows in the mid 40s.
Super Bowl Weekend Forecast: An area of high pressure will build in behind the low, and that will clear out the rain. However, it looks like we will still have a few clouds lingering around all weekend. The forecast will call for a mix of sun and clouds both
Saturday and Sunday. Highs will be in the mid to upper 50s, and lows will be in the upper 30s. It will be great weather for watching the Super Bowl!
Super Bowl Forecast: If you are headed to Miami today then you better plan on more rain moving through today. They will have scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be around 80. Mostly sunny, breezy and drier weather will return to South Florida on Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the upper 70s, and lows in the mid 60s.
Unfortunately rain will return on Friday and Saturday, but it will stay warm with highs around 80, and lows in the mid 60s.
On Super Bowl Sunday, the weather will improve and actually be very nice. Mostly sunny skies are expected with highs in the lower 70s. At kickoff, the weather will still be mostly sunny with a temperature around 71. It will be ideal weather for the game!!
